The Envoy is a luxury trim line of the GMC Jimmy SUV (the same platform as the Chevrolet Blazer) for 1998. This version used a 190 hp Vortec 4300. It was taken off the line after the 2000 model year. In 2002 the new redesigned Envoy replaced the Jimmy name in GMC's lineup.
Even though it still shares a platform with the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, it has a much more distinctive styling. The Envoy was voted Motor Trend magazine's SUV of the Year for 2002 and the 4200 Vortec I-6 engine has been named in Ward's 10 Best Engines list every year since its debut.
For 2007, the Envoy has introduced standard features such as stability control, an OnStar system, and cruise control across all trims. Also for 2007 the GMC Envoy adds new 18-inch alloy wheels to the Denali trim.
The GMC Envoy features an array of refined and elegant SUVs. The Envoy is a five-passenger SUV with two rows of comfortable seating. The SLE and SLT models can effortlessly take on other SUVs in their segment, including the Ford Explorer, although the Explorer offers far more superior driving dynamics in comparison. The luxurious Envoy Denali with the powerful V8 performs well and impresses with its cargo-hauling and trailer-towing capability.
The Envoy has a basic warranty of 5 years or 100,000 miles.
Engine and Performance
Award-winning I-6 engine and robust V-8 engine
The 2007 GMC Envoy is a 4-door, 5-passenger sport-utility, available in 2 models: base Envoy and Denali. The base Envoy model comes in SLE and SLT trims.
The base Envoy is equipped with a standard 4.2L Inline-6 engine that produces 291 hp and 277 lb-ft. of torque. Envoy Denali is equipped with a standard 5.3L V-8 engine with active fuel management that generates 302 hp and 330 lb-ft. of torque. All models are coupled to a 4-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with overdrive that offers an easy and smooth drive.
All models for the 2007 Envoy come in either two-wheel-drive (2WD) or the four-wheel-drive (4WD) configurations. The standard Envoy and Denali 2WD give an EPA estimated fuel economy of 16/22 mpg (city/highway), whereas the 4WD give 15/21 mpg (city/highway). The standard has a maximum towing capacity of 6,300 lbs, while the Denali model can tow 6,600 lbs.
Walk-around
Clean and sleek design
The Envoy models were given very few exterior upgrades for 2007 such as the new chrome grille accent and body side molding. However, the exterior remains largely unchanged for 2007. The SLE, SLT, and Denali trim levels now sport new side and rear badges.
All Envoy models now feature a single antenna for OnStar and XM Satellite Radio. The Envoy is a statement in style and performance; it is geared up with standard exterior equipment that helps reinforce this fact.
Some exterior features include front and rear fascias with color-key, rear step (includes a pad), fog lamps, solar-ray deep tinted glass, bright trim molded plastic, and an additional chrome accented, body-colored grille, dual halogen composite headlamps with automatic lamp control, luggage rack, rear door liftgate, wipers, and more.
Comfort, Controls & Convenience
Plush and roomy with ample stowage
The leather upholstery in the Envoy SLT and Denali is elegant and plush, but the cloth in the SLE offers the driver a snugger seat. The driver's bucket seat in the SLT and Denali is eight-way power adjustable, with two-way lumbar support, optional heat, and shoulder belts fixed to the seatbacks.
The SLT and Denali sport a burl woodgrain trim on the center stack and console. The Envoy has splashes of wood that play on the light switches and the switches on the door armrests. The brushed nickel interior trim gives it a plush ambience and the four big round registers for heating and air conditioning are done up in nickel as well. The four-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel with climate, audio, and cruise control is standard on the SLT and Denali.
Roomy and comfortable, the Envoy models provide ample first-row and second-row head, leg, shoulder, and hip room. All Envoy rear seats fold flat to accommodate extra cargo. The rear cargo panel with an adjustable-height level-feature maximizes cargo space with its versatility. The flat load floor in the rear can be extended when the seats are folded, or raised to conceal articles stored beneath it.
Some standard and available interior features comprise of a manual air conditioning or automatic dual-zone air conditioning, rear cargo convenience net and mat (SLT/Denali), rear compartment 5-floor cargo tie down, overhead console with available Universal Home Remote (not available on the SLE), electronic cruise control with set and resume speed, rear-window electric defogger, power programmable door locks, (that unlock with removal of ignition key and lockout protection), rear child security door locks, inside rearview mirror with compass, leather wrapped steering wheel rim, rear audio controls, Driver Information Center (standard on the SLT and Denali), Enhanced Quiet Package with strategically placed elements for sound insulation, keyless entry, OnStar system, and sunroof (available on the SLT and Denali).
Driving Impressions
Exceptional powertrains with next-gen technology
The Envoy offers a choice of truly impressive engine options. It has a smooth and comfortable driving quality and can handle any kind of terrain with a rare savoir faire. The vehicle's steering and handling could use a stint in the refinement department though. Suspension needs some fine tuning too.
The steering is smooth and graceful. The 4.2L 6-cylinder engine dishes out some powerful performance and heaps of torque. Transmission is responsive and seamless shifts have the Envoy taking on uphill roads effortlessly.
Safety
Impressive list of safety features
The Envoy earned five stars (the absolute best) when equipped with the optional airbags for front and rear passenger protection in the NHTSA's side-impact test. It earned three stars for driver and four stars for front-passenger protection for frontal-impact.
Standard safety features on the base Envoy comprise of driver and right front-passenger air bags with passenger sensing system, 4-wheel antilock brakes (the 4-wheel disc helps reduce wheel lockup during hard braking on slippery or dry surfaces), daytime running lamps (includes automatic exterior lamp control), OnStar with one-year safe and sound service, and a theft-deterrent system ( PASS lock). Full-length head curtain airbags are optional.
