The 2007 Pontiac G6 is a mid-size car manufactured by General Motors. Launched at the 2004 North American International Auto Show in September 2004, the G6 is based on the GM Epsilon platform. It is a replacement for the Pontiac Grand Am, and it reflects in its title too. The G6 may be considered as the sixth generation of the Grand Am, and hence the title G6, signifying ‘Grand Am 6th Generation.’
The G6 is available in three models: 4-door G6 Sedan, 2-door G6 Coupe, and 2-door G6 Convertible. The G6 Sedan is available in a 5-seater configuration, while the G6 Coupe and G6 Convertible are offered in a 4-seater configuration each.
The G6 Sedan is available in four trims: 1SV, Base, GT, and GTP. The G6 Coupe is available in two trims: GT and GTP. The G6 Convertible is available in a single trim: GT. All trims are available in a front-wheel drive (FWD) layout.
The G6 comes with a powertrain warranty for five years or 100,000 miles and a basic warranty for three years or 36,000 miles. The top competitors of the G6 include the Chevrolet Malibu, Saturn Aura, Cadillac BLS, Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Hyundai Sonata, and Mazda 6.

With three models and seven trims, the G6 offers a choice of four engines. The 1SV is powered by a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder ECOTEC engine, which produces 169 hp @ 6,300 rpm and 162 lb-ft. of torque @ 4,500 rpm. The Base and GT get power from a 3.5-liter V-6 engine, which delivers 224 hp @ 5,800 rpm and 220 lb-ft. @ 4,000 rpm. The engines of 1SV, Base, and GT are linked to a standard electronically controlled 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive.
However, the GT is also available with the option of a 3.9-liter V-6 engine that churns out 240 hp @ 6,000 rpm and 240 lb-ft. @ 4,600 rpm. This engine is coupled with a 6-speed manual transmission.
Under the hood of the GTP lies a 3.6-liter V-6 engine, which issues 252 hp @ 6,300 rpm and 251 lb-ft. @ 3,200 rpm. This engine is linked to a standard electronically controlled 6-speed automatic transmission with overdrive and also includes a manual shift mode. |

The G6 is available in a FWD layout, which provides it with impressive traction on all kinds of terrains. It is offered in a choice of four engines: 2.4L I-4, 3.5L V-6, 3.9L V-6, and 3.6L V-6. These engines generate maximum power of 169 hp, 224 hp, 240 hp, and 252 hp respectively. All the four engines are good performers; especially the V-6 engines, which provide ample torque at all engine speeds. The 4-speed AT, 6-speed MT, and 6-speed AT is intuitive and responsive.
The 1SV and Base models are steered by an electric power steering (EPS), while the GT and GTP are directed by a hydraulic power steering (HPS). The Base is also available with the option of HPS. Both the steering are responsive and offer direct, precise responses, but the HPS feels slightly crisper than the EPS.
The 1SV and Base are equipped with a Touring suspension, while the GT and GTP ride on a sport suspension with thicker direct acting front stabilizer bar and enhanced steering rack bushing, and thicker rear stabilizer bar. This fine-tuned suspension system delivers a surprisingly sporty ride. It also minimizes body sway while cornering or cruising on uneven roads.
The 1SV and Base feature 4-wheel disc brakes, while the GT and GTP come with 4-wheel anti-lock, 4-wheel disc brakes, which also include traction control. These sharp brakes provide vigorous stopping power to the G6’s wheels and bring it to a quick, screech-less halt at an extremely short distance.
The Base model is offered with the option of Enhanced Traction System (ETS), while the GT comes standard with full-function Traction Control System (TCS). The ETS monitors power and gear selection to prevent wheel spin during acceleration.
The GTP comes standard with Stabilitrak, which is optional on GT. Stabilitrak is one of the most advanced vehicle dynamic control systems. It constantly measures vehicle forces to selectively monitor and manipulate braking and accelerator inputs to maintain composure, should the driver lose control.
