| Driving Impressions |
|
| Offers responsive steering, agile handling, and comfortable ride |
|
|
The GMC Savana is offered in a standard RWD version, though AWD is also available as an option. The AWD continuously monitors the delivery of torque to all four wheels in a smooth manner, and enhances traction, thereby minimizing the risk of wheel slip.
All engines available on the Savana deliver impressive output and decent acceleration for cruising on smooth urban roads as well as rough country roads. However, the Vortec 6.0-liter V-8 engine, which generates a whopping 300 horsepower at 4,400 rpm and 360 lb-ft. at 4,000 rpm scores over others in terms of an all-round performance. The 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive acts in a responsive manner and offers a smooth ride.
All RWD models of the Savana ride on independent front suspension with coil springs and stabilizer bar, while the AWD models feature an independent front suspension, including computer-selected torsion bar and stabilizer bar. The rear suspension includes hypoid drive axle with multi-leaf springs. This suspension system soaks the impact of bumps on the roads and offers a jerk-free ride.
Sharp and strong 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes empower the Savana to stop at remarkably short distances as soon as the brake pedal is pushed. A rear locking differential is optional on the Cargo Van and Passenger Van, but is not available on 3500 Extended/Regular Wheelbase RWD models. The differential distributes power evenly to both the rear wheels in less-than-ideal traction conditions. At lower speeds, the differential automatically senses wheel spin, locks the rear axle, and transfers torque to the rear wheels with more traction, thereby helping the driver to handle slippery road conditions
The 3500 models of the Savana come standard with StabiliTrak, a vehicle stability enhancement system. It helps the Savana respond to steering commands. During difficult driving conditions, sensors feed data to an onboard computer, which adjusts engine speed, and brake pressure to any individual wheel to help the driver keep the vehicle on track.
The regular wheelbase and extended wheelbase models of the GMC Savana come with a ground clearance of 8.6 inches and 8.4 inches respectively, which enables them to take on bumpy and irregular terrains without much problem.
