Beating the Texas Heat: A/C and Cooling System Service for Your Chevy

August in Bastrop County is when vehicles tell the truth. A cooling system that was marginal in April fails in August. An A/C compressor that was noisy in June quits when the heat index hits 108. If you have been ignoring something, this is the month it stops being optional.

Your A/C and Your Cooling System Are Different Things

People use the terms interchangeably, and they are separate systems that fail in different ways.

The air conditioning system cools the cabin using refrigerant, a compressor, a condenser, and an evaporator. When it fails, you are uncomfortable.

The engine cooling system keeps the engine within its operating temperature range using coolant, a radiator, a water pump, a thermostat, and hoses. When it fails, you are on the shoulder of Highway 71 with the hood up and potentially facing a very expensive repair.

Both work harder in extreme heat, and the A/C system actually adds load to the cooling system, which is why problems often surface together.

Warning Signs Your A/C Is Failing

• Air is cool but not cold, or cools only while moving
• Cooling gets worse the longer you drive
• Clicking, squealing, or grinding when the A/C engages
• A musty smell from the vents, often a clogged cabin filter or evaporator drain
• Visible moisture or oily residue near A/C lines and fittings

Important: repeatedly adding refrigerant is not a repair. Refrigerant is a sealed system. If it is low, it leaked out, and it will leak out again. Find the leak.

Warning Signs Your Cooling System Is in Trouble

• Temperature gauge reading higher than normal, especially in traffic
• Sweet smell after driving, which usually means a coolant leak
• Coolant puddles under the vehicle, typically green, orange, or pink
• The overflow reservoir needing regular top-off
• Heater blowing cold in winter, which can indicate low coolant or a stuck thermostat

If the temperature gauge climbs into the red, pull over and shut the engine down. Continuing to drive an overheating engine turns a hose repair into a head gasket or a replacement engine.

Why Central Texas Is Harder on These Systems

Three factors compound here. Ambient temperatures over 100 degrees reduce the temperature difference the radiator relies on to shed heat. Stop-and-go traffic on Highway 71 into Austin means less airflow through the radiator right when the engine is working hardest. And our dust and pollen load clogs condenser and radiator fins, which cuts cooling efficiency before anything actually breaks.

That last one is worth noting. A visual inspection and a cleaning can restore meaningful cooling capacity on a vehicle that has never had it done.

What Service Actually Involves

An A/C performance check measures vent temperature, system pressures, and compressor operation, and includes a dye or electronic leak test if pressures are low. A cooling system service includes a pressure test to find leaks, an inspection of hoses, clamps, the water pump, and the radiator, a coolant condition check, and verification that the fans cycle correctly.

Neither takes long, and both are far cheaper than what they prevent.

Follow the interval in your owner’s manual, which varies by model and coolant type. In our climate, having the condition checked annually is a good practice regardless of the interval.

Can I use an off-the-shelf A/C recharge can?

We do not recommend it. Those kits do not address the underlying leak, and overcharging the system can damage the compressor, turning a smaller repair into a larger one.
