1. “DO I NEED SNOW TIRES?”
– Snow tires can be extremely important if you live in an area that gets snow, ice, sleet or freezing rain and temperatures of 40 degrees or colder. They are also a good idea if you are planning on taking road trips that will take you through snow or over mountains in the colder months.

2. “IF MY TIRES ARE MARKED ‘M+S’ ON THE SIDEWALL AM I GOOD TO DRIVE ON SNOW?”
– You may see some tires marked with “M+S”, this stands for mud and snow. While these are most likely decent tires, they only deliver better traction in wet conditions than non-M+S tires. In cold and/or slick conditions, these tires may not provide you the traction and control you need. If it is true snow tires you are looking for, look for tires with a Mountain Snowflake symbol on the side. This means they have been tested and certified to perform under winter conditions.

3. “I HAVE ALL-SEASON TIRES, SO I DON’T NEED SNOW TIRES. RIGHT?”
– Unfortunately, this is not the case. Only snow tires can give you the stopping ability and secure handling you’ll need when driving on wet or icy roads. The difference is the rubber the tires are made of. Winter tires are made with a rubber that is softer and more pliable in winter conditions. The more flexible the rubber, the better traction you get on wet and icy roads.

4. “SHOULD I GET MY SNOW TIRES SIPED?”
– Siping is the process of cutting thin slits across the surface of a tire to improve traction for driving in snowy, wet or icy conditions. Siping can also help manage tire heat when the road is overly hot. Most winter tires are already siped, but additional sipping may be needed for used or worn tires.

5. “IS IT OKAY TO BUY USED WINTER TIRES?”
– It may take some work, but you can find some nice used snow tires. Here are a couple things to look out for though. One, make sure they are the right size. You can verify this by looking in your owner’s manual for you exact tire size. Second, measure the tread depth with a tread depth gauge. You may want to pass if there are 6/32nds of an inch or less of tread left on the tire. Third, be sure there’s not a problem with uneven wear. Did your tread gauge measurements show any tread depth difference between the four tires?

6. “CAN I JUST BUY CHAINS INSTEAD OF SNOW TIRES?”
– Chains are definitely important, and they definitely have their time, but chains are mainly for traveling at a slower rate on icy mountain roads. They aren’t made for highway driving, or driving at high speeds. Snow tires are ideal for everyday driving is areas with icy/snowy conditions.

7. “DO I NEED STUDDED SNOW TIRES OR STUDLESS?”
– You can work with your tire dealer to go over what your driving habits are, and they will give you their recommendations. Studless snow tires usually work best in slushy areas, or areas with pact snow. Studded tires are mainly used in icy areas with heavy snowfall. The studs in the tires dig into icy surfaces and create more traction.

Well, we hope you were able to get all your bbq’s, camping trips and swimming days in over the last few months. Because summer is coming to an end whether you like it or not. For most of us, that means cooler weather and nastier road conditions. Your car was good to you over the summer months, so now is the time to make sure it’s good to you over these coming cooler months. Here are a few tips to make sure you stay safe on the road, and to make sure your vehicle runs smoothly in all conditions.

1. Vehicle Inspection: Technicians will be able to inspect your vehicle and assess its exact needs. Often times they will perform checks and tests on fluids, batteries, belts, hoses, etc.

2. Tire Tread: This may be one of the most important maintenance tips to focus on. With adverse road conditions, your tires should preferably be in tip-top shape. This means your tire-tread should be at least 2/32″.

3. Windshield Wipers: For most of us, the coming months will be much wetter than the previous months. And since seeing out of your windshield is generally a pretty important part of safe driving, you are going to want to make sure your windshield wipers are up to the task of handling all the rain and snow coming your way. If your wiper blades are more than 6 months old, you may want to think about getting them replaced.

4. Fuel: Moisture can build up in your fuel pump and really create some problems. It is a good idea to add de-icer to your gas tank once a month to make sure moisture doesn’t freeze within your fuel line.

5. Lights: Driving at night in bad road conditions can be extremely unsafe. That’s why it’s important to make sure your vehicle’s lights are all in working order. Make sure all burned out bulbs are replaced and to clean any grime from lenses with a moist towel.

6. Emergencies: Carry gloves, boots, blankets, flares, a small shovel, sand or kitty litter, tire chains, a flashlight, and a cell phone. Put a few “high-energy” snacks in your glove box.

Summer is here and that means warmer weather and sun baked cars when you get in them after a long work day. I mean, let’s face it we all know how it feels to sit on blazing hot leather seats after your car has been sitting for a while. It burns literally, ok maybe not literally, but you catch our drift.

Follow these tips to keep your car cool during hot summer days.

1. Use a sunshade or window visor
This tried and true method for keeping your car cool, should be your go to option. Just put the shade up every time you exit your vehicle for more than a few minutes and you should be good to go!

2. Use a dash cover
If you did not already know a fabric or upholstered dash cover can go a long way in keeping your vehicle more comfortable during the hot summer temps. A dash cover will keep you from feeling overwhelmed by the heat radiating off your vehicles interior.

3. Cover your steering wheel with a hand towel
Even with a sunshade it’s still a good idea to cover your steering wheel with a small towel, just in case. This will help ensure that you can actually touch your steering wheel upon driving your vehicle.

4. Park in a shady area
Another tried and true option, whenever possible always park in a shaded area. Trust us when we say it’ll be far worth it even if you have to park far away.

5. Keep any possessions out of the sun
Any delicate items that you may keep in your vehicle like CD’s, headphones, sunglasses etc. should be stored out of the sunlight. Use your trunk, glovebox and or even as a last resort throw a blanket over your possessions to shade them.

6. Park in the Garage when possible
This should be an obvious if you have a garage, park in there as your vehicle will be kept out of direct sunlight and benefit from consistent shading.

7. Keep windows slightly cracked
Keeping your windows slightly cracked with help with ventilation leading to a cooler vehicle. If you do this, make sure you are unable to fit your arm through the crack.

8. Throw blankets over your seats
If your car has vinyl or leather seats then you know firsthand how hot your seats will get when exposed to direct sunlight. To keep seats cool, place a blanket or towel over the top of them.

Visibility is fundamental to safe driving. Although drivers depend on their vehicles’ wiper blades to clear away rain, sleet and snow, many wait to replace them until they need them the most. So remembering to maintain wiper blades regularly can maximize visibility, efficiency and reliability.

Wiper blades should be replaced every six months to a year or as soon as you notice a difference in driving visibility. When wiper blades no longer make proper contact with the windshield surface, they can begin to squeak, chatter, skip, smear or streak reducing driving visibility.

When inspecting wiper blades, look for the following:
• Broken frame – detachment of frame arms at joints or connection points.
• Metal Corrosion – especially at joints and claws.
• Visible cracks, tears, and missing pieces in the rubber squeegee’s edge.
• Flex rubber squeegee back and forth to see if it is still flexible. Aged squeegees will have difficulty conforming to the shape of your windshield and create streaks.
• Check squeegee wiping edge for rounded edges which can prevent the wiper blade from making strong contact with the windshield and reduces wipe quality.
• Tug to ensure wiper blade has been securely installed on the wiper arm.
• Check that squeegee is secure in the wiper frame.
Remember to check your wiper blades as part of your regular preventative maintenance program!

Tire maintenance is important because your tires are the only part of your car that has direct contact with the road. Tires affect your vehicle handling, ride, braking, and safety. Our team is available to help but these are great tips to know.

Checking your tires on a regular basis is an important step in protecting your safety and your automotive investment. Ideally, tire inspections should be performed monthly. If you drive over potholes and debris in the road, live in a cold climate, or drive long distances regularly, then you should inspect your tires more often.

Things to Look For:

– Over inflation: Too much air pressure causes mostly the tire’s middle section to contact the road. This creates wear primarily in the center of the tread, with less wear at the tire’s edges.

– Under inflation: Too little air pressure causes mostly the tire’s outer edges to contact the road. This creates wear primarily on both edges of the tire tread, with less wear in the center.

– Tread wear on one edge of the tire: This typically occurs when the wheels are out of alignment.

– Erratic tread wear: This is often called cupping, and may mean the wheel is out of balance, or that the shock absorbers or other suspension components need to be replaced.

– Raised portion of the tread or sidewall: May indicate that one of the belts in the tire carcass has separated from those next to it.

There are several tire maintenance procedures that automotive repair professionals should do because they require special tools and knowledge. However, understanding these procedures will help you feel more confident.
